Sanford served as Chief Inspector of the New York City Police Department, the highest position in the department responsible for a force of over 35,000 personnel. He was also elected President of the New York City Council, one of the three highest elected government officials in New York City.
Sandy's distinguished law enforcement experience included serving as Chief of the New York City Transit Police Department and Director of Security for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, in charge of security for the nation's largest transportation system. He worked on all aspects of law enforcement and government on the international, national and municipal levels.
As a professor, consultant and author, Sandy educated thousands of individuals throughout the world in all areas of security, law enforcement and government.
In Sandy’s honor Excel Global Security has created the Sanford D. Garelik Memorial Scholarship Fund.
